TiVo Wireless Adapter

For the past year or so, I’ve had my Series 2 TiVo box connected to my home network using a Netgear wireless adapter (model #WG111). Poor signal strengh and frequent lost connections were typical with this adapter. The other day, I read a bunch of reviews on the TiVo-branded wireless adapter and a majority of them were very positive. So I’m giving it a try.

It was delivered today…

The old Netgear and the shiny new Tivo adapters side by side.

The old Netgear adapter got a signal strength as high as 66% (Marginal), but on average hovered around 30% (Poor). It lost it’s connection on average two or three times per week, requiring a restart of the router, the TiVo box, or both.

When I plugged in the Tivo adapter, I expected to have to go through some set up on the Tivo box, on my router, or both. Instead, it connected immediately. I ran a test connection and it went through all steps without a hitch.

With the TiVo adapter in the same position as the old Netgear, the signal strength has improved significantly and is hovering around the 80% mark. By moving it around to a few different spots, the signal got even stronger.

So far I’m very pleased, but I still must wait to see how well it stays connected on it’s own. I’ll give it a few weeks before making my final decision.
